The Billion-Dollar Sprint: Inside Africa's Lopsided 2026 Comeback
Capital is flowing into African tech again — fast. But the recovery is concentrated in fewer, larger cheques, and the founders left outside the room are asking who the comeback is really for.

By the first week of June 2026, the running total had a momentum of its own. African startups had raised about $1.3bn for the year, a figure that arrived early enough in the calendar to feel less like an accounting line and more like a sprint, according to tracking by TechCabal Insights. Eighteen months earlier, the prevailing mood across the continent's tech hubs had been something close to grief. Now the question on every investor call was a hopeful one: would the first half of 2026 break records?
It was close. TechCabal Insights noted that by early June the ecosystem sat roughly $121m short of surpassing the entire first-half haul of 2025, which had closed at about $1.42bn, with most of June still to run. A single mega-deal could settle it. In fact one nearly had: the first three days of June alone brought in some $215m, lifted by a large raise from the electric-mobility company Spiro. The headline was unambiguous. The money was back.
